How Do You Prove Yourself as a Project Manager?

As a project management professional, how do you “earn your stripes”? How do you prove yourself?

Each of our partners has been doing this work for a long time. We know what we’re doing. We know that we know what we’re doing. And our clients know that we know what we’re doing, too. We’ve developed confidence in ourselves and nurtured trust with our clients through decades of wins and losses.

But it took us a long time to get to this point in our careers. How does a new (or somewhat new) project manager prove themselves to their clients and to other people in the profession? What does it take to earn credibility as a project manager? How do you get your “expert” label? How do you gain enough confidence to claim that you’re an excellent project manager?

One partner’s project management path

One of our partners, Stacy, started out as a technical writer before moving to the project management office in the health insurance claims processing firm where she worked. As a new member of the project management office, she tracked work activities and gathered information at first. Like many project managers, she was mentored into the field.

“I found a mentor who saw something in me and pulled me into the PMO for a huge software development project,” she says. “That was all it took.”

Though that first project, a multi-year effort, eventually failed (a heartbreaker for Stacy!), she says the experience created a passion for project management and was an ideal learning environment for a young PM. (Failure can be a fabulous teacher). After that first project, she continued developing her skills on successive projects. And had some big wins, too!

How to build project management credibility

Start where you are and build your skillset (and brand) with solid, consistent steps.

Lean in to your natural leadership skills.

As project managers, we’re natural leaders and problem-solvers. We love taking risks. Our advice is to use those natural tendencies within yourself to do as much work as you can under the best mentors you can find and to embrace a wide variety of projects until you secure your footing—and identify your niche.

Do one thing and do it really well.

As you find work on a project, look around and notice what needs to be done and learn to do it well.

On her first big project, Stacy threw herself into scheduling and by its end, she was an expert scheduler. Whether it’s building a work plan or developing dashboards, use your critical thinking skills to explore the thing you’re in charge of doing and find ways to do it better.

Be open to acquiring more skills.

Once you know how to do one thing well, don’t get stuck! Move from scheduling or risk management to meeting facilitation or organizational change management. Build your skill sets and you’ll be a highly flexible manager (who’s in high demand).

Seek out continuing education and formal skills training.

By pursuing specialty or supplemental training, you’re only improving your capability and credibility.

You can certainly become a project management expert through on-the-job training (many excellent project managers have). But it never hurts to have more classes, certificates, or degrees to your name. (And for Pete’s sake don’t let your PMP credential lapse!)

When Stacy earned an MBA in business administration and a project management professional certification, it not only gave her more skills, it gave her clients confidence that she is curious, knowledgeable, resilient, and up-to-date in her training.

Build your network.

Never stop building relationships with other professionals in your industry. Continue to seek out new mentors. Use your social media platforms to share about your work but also to amplify and engage with the work of others. Strong relationships help you build credibility and often pave the way to your next assignment.

Give back.

Once you’re more experienced, don’t hesitate to pay it forward.

Reach out to rising project managers and offer to make yourself available for questions, meet with them, or even formally mentor them. Bringing up someone else who has the aptitude for doing this work is not only good karma, it strengthens the project management industry as a whole.
