Powerful Local Women: Marla Prince

The Social Beauty Studio was born the moment Marla Prince noticed a U-Haul truck in front of a window where she’d always noticed a little salon chair along Capitol Boulevard in Tumwater. The next day, a “For Rent” sign was hanging in the window.

She signed a lease on the spot, applied for a loan, and spent the next several months renovating the space with her husband. She opened her salon — her first-ever business venture — in August of 2019.

“Trust your first gut instinct” is what Marla believes. “I believed in myself and I suddenly knew it would bloom even if it didn’t make sense to anyone else.”

That instinct came from a vision Marla was nurturing: to work in a place where she could mentor other stylists, create an environment where hair artists could share ideas, and develop a space of safety and comfort for clients.

Marla worked in hair salons for years but never felt the sense of synergy and mutual support that she yearned for. In fact, she was overworked, unhappy, and questioning her career choice.

But once she did some deep thinking, she realized that she had a gift that she wanted to dedicate herself to: helping people feel good about themselves.

Marla had never been attracted to the idea of starting her own business. In fact, she wasn’t interested at all. But once she saw that U-Haul, something sparked.

Once she took the leap, the affirmations kept coming. She loved the building. She hired her first two team members almost immediately. And business bloomed, just as she’d suspected.

Success = Nurturing

Marla thinks her success is tied to her commitment to her team. She hires for “personality and drive,” knowing that if she was going to create a safe space for collaboration and mentoring that she’d have to hire people carefully and care for them.

“I am completely invested in their success,” she says. “I want to stand by my people when they open their salons,” she added. “I want to be part of their journey.”

She believes in mentoring and invests herself in learning to do it better. To develop skills, Marla has pursued some leadership training; she’s relentlessly self-aware and always looking inward to make sure she’s being the leader she aspires to be.

Weathering the Pandemic

When the pandemic hit, Marla was forced to close their doors for three months. “I didn’t even think about myself. We had some savings. But I was obsessed with making sure my people would make it through.”

When she finally started to contemplate reopening, she had daily Zoom meetings with her team to develop COVID protocols. In fact, she says, the local salon community really came together. Stylists from Robert Allen, Lux, and Lonestar (to name a few) emerged as information brokers and problem solvers.

Marla and her team pivoted first to retail sales. It worked: their clients ordered products and used curbside pick-up. Some even paid for services they never received, in order to support the salon. “I discovered a lot of badass women during the pandemic,” she said.

How It Started, How It’s Going

Marla wanted to style hair since the moment she laid hands on a Barbie. Her mother, however, had different ideas. She wanted Marla to be a banker, then a pharmacist — anything but a hair stylist. So Marla became a banker. Then she went to pharmacy school. And she hated every second of it.

Finally, a pharmacy instructor told her she really needed to get the heck out of there and do something with her hands. “He was so right,” she laughs, “and my mother was just horrified.”

But Marla is exactly where she should be. In fact, her business is so successful that she was starting to contemplate opening a second location. Instead, she ended up expanding into the former Brown Derby Antiques space next door. And here’s further proof that Marla’s business is a study in synchronicity: the very night she was planning to call the building owner to see if she could lease just part of the space (she had pulled out of a deal to expand into the entire thing), the owner reached out to her with the same idea!

The expansion allowed Marla to add a laundry room (for three years she took the salon laundry home every day), a shampoo room, and a sitting area with a sofa and chairs. Another notable outcome: her new neighbor in the remaining Brown Derby space is a female archaeologist and investigator. Seems like badass women just seem to find each other.

Asked how she thinks she’s done so well, Marla says, ““We are capable of so much; you just have to believe in yourself.” We couldn’t agree more. Congratulations, Marla! We’re so glad to have you in our community.
