What We Learned: The Weakless Challenge

In the fall, Stacy invested in an online course, The (dis)Comfort Zone Workshop, offered by one of her favorite fitness gurus, Jason Seib. She roped Shelley and their trainer, Jen, into the picture and everyone agreed to try The Weakless Challenge for six weeks.

The program, developed by Jason Seib, is built on the idea that we’re addicted to comfort, that we default to self-abuse instead of self-care, and that changing our relationship with discomfort will change the way we think about ourselves and help us take on (instead of ruminate on) hard, uncomfortable things.

This really resonated. Comfort junkies: that’s us. We’re painfully aware of how often we default to the easiest choice instead of challenging ourselves to do things that are difficult.

We love goals. And we loved the idea of this challenge because new assignments and goals are revealed week by week: you’re not supposed to read ahead, so you won’t psych yourself out. We liked the idea of shifting goals and targets. It kept things fresh and gave us opportunities to say yes over and over again instead of working toward a static One Thing. It was scary, but in a good way.

These were some of the challenges: to blast ourselves with cold water for sixty seconds at the end of each shower, to meditate for a few minutes every day, cut out snacking, and carve out time to be deliberately bored.

That last one was our favorite, maybe because boredom isn’t often something we seek out. It’s incidental in our lives, something we tolerate if we’re forced into it rather than something we turn to as a useful tool.

Here’s what happened: we didn’t finish the challenge. As the challenges got harder and longer every week, we lost steam. So we stopped. And we have different feelings about that. Shelley feels (mostly) fine with that. Stacy feels pretty bummed that she didn’t complete the challenge because the gains were, quite honestly, pretty empowering.

Here’s the thing. It worked for a while, until it didn’t. We learned a lot, but then life got in the way. It was such a cool thing to do but we just weren’t ready for the whole enchilada. Or maybe the timing was just off. The honest truth is that, at the end of the day, we had to work and make dinner and spend time with our families. And sleep.

And all of that is okay because we’ve learned how to seek the lesson in everything, including learning when it’s alright to let something go. And, we hope, when it’s time to take up a challenge like this again.

Here’s what we learned:

Shelley

At first, it was great! The first two weeks of the challenge were fairly easy to incorporate into her daily life and some of the tasks had great benefits. No snacking…seriously? But she adopted that part of the challenge and has attempted (feebly) to limit snacks during the day ever since.

But soon, it took up too much time. The second two weeks of the challenge required much more time — so much that her life couldn’t handle it. This is when she ditched the challenge. But she learned to do what you have time for and feel good about it. When your schedule allows, try to add one thing at a time. You can make your own rules: you don’t have to do it all.

It’s better together. Do a challenge like this with friends so you can compare notes, share tips, and enjoy the process.

Cold showers are dreadful.

Stacy

She really did feel strong. All those weeks of cold showers and planks left Stacy with this feeling of “I really can do hard things!” Takeaway: doing more uncomfortable things can definitely lead to more badassery.

Discomfort can be an ally. Having recently survived a family vacation to Costa Rica where travel brought delights and disappointments, Stacy was able to reflect on how changing her perspective on discomfort could change a raging disappointment into a whimsical observation.

We rise to the level of our systems. You’ve heard us talk about “habit stacks” and achieving goals. Success is in consistently doing things we may not always want to do. This challenge reinforced the practice of achieving automaticity with one ritual or habit before adding another. But do keep adding, always!

Cold showers aren’t as cold in Costa Rica

Would we do it again? Maybe. But we think the more important question is whether we’ll try other new things again, and the answer to that is absolutely. The lessons we learn every day are more valuable than completing any challenge, fulfilling a resolution, or living up to a dusty promise.
